10 Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Security Camera Installer in NJ

Most camera systems that disappoint were not bad cameras. They were the wrong cameras in the wrong places, installed by someone who was gone the moment the check cleared. Before you hire anyone in New Jersey, including us, ask these ten questions. The answers tell you more than the price does.
1. Are the cameras wired or Wi-Fi, and why?
A good installer will recommend wired (PoE) cameras for anything you rely on, and explain when Wi-Fi or battery cameras make sense. If the answer is “Wi-Fi is easier for us,” keep looking. Our take: wired vs. Wi-Fi cameras.
2. Where does the footage go, and who owns it?
Local recording on an NVR means no monthly fee and footage that stays in your house. Cloud plans add up and can change terms. Either is fine, but you should know which one you are buying and how many days of video it holds.
3. Will I be able to see the cameras on my phone before you leave?
The answer should be yes, with the app installed, logged in and tested on your phone, and a five-minute walkthrough of how to review and save clips.
4. How will the cables be run, and will you show me?
Exposed cable stapled down the siding is the mark of a rushed job. Ask how they will hide runs, whether they fish walls, and what happens if they need to open drywall.
5. What resolution and night performance do you install?
4K is the standard now for anything covering a driveway or entry. Ask to see night footage from a real job, not the box.
6. Do you need a license for this, and do you carry insurance?
In New Jersey, camera-only systems do not require a burglar-alarm license; monitored alarm systems do. Any installer on your property should carry general liability insurance and be able to show it. We install cameras and do not install monitored alarm systems, and we say so up front.
7. Can I add cameras later without starting over?
The recorder should have spare channels and the switch spare ports. If the quote maxes out every port on day one, the next camera costs you a new system.
8. What happens when my internet provider swaps the router?
This is the most common reason cameras “stop working.” A good installer sets the system up so a router change does not break it, and picks up the phone when it does.
9. What is not included in the quote?
Ask specifically about electrical outlets, drywall repair, cloud fees and extra cable footage. Surprises live in the exclusions.
10. Can I talk to a customer in my town?
Reviews are good; a neighbor is better. We can point you to recent installs in your area, and you can read our Google reviews.
What a good quote looks like
A written estimate with camera count and model, recorder size and storage days, where each camera points, how cables are run, what is excluded, and a timeline. Ours usually arrive the same day from a few photos of the property. Typical costs are in our NJ camera installation cost guide.
