The older-house catch: neutral wires
Many homes in Somerset, Union and Essex counties built before 1990 have switch boxes with no neutral. Most smart switches need one. We check every box before recommending hardware, which is why we quote after looking, not over the phone.
Motorised shades
Lutron shades on the same system as the lighting, so one button sets a room properly. Wired where the building allows it, battery where it does not, and fabric chosen for the light the room actually gets.

Smart bulbs or smart switches?
Switches, almost always. A smart bulb stops responding the moment somebody flips the wall switch, and six recessed cans means six bulbs to manage. A Lutron dimmer controls the whole circuit and looks like an ordinary switch.
My house has no neutral wires. Does that rule it out?
No. Lutron Caseta dimmers do not require a neutral, which is often what makes an older New Jersey home straightforward. We check every box first rather than discovering it on install day.
Does it still work if the internet goes down?
Yes. The dimmer on the wall controls its circuit locally. What you lose while the internet is out is remote access from your phone and voice control.
Can I start with one room?
That is what we usually recommend. Do the room you use most in the evening, live with it for a month, and grow from there. The hardware carries over.
